Write, produce and star in a film in 5 weeks.
This immersive program gives young creatives the chance to explore the art of filmmaking, working hands-on with professional equipment to bring their stories to life.
From writing and acting to cinematography and editing, this course offers a full introduction to the exciting world of film and TV production, culminating in a final screening of their work on the big screen.
5 Week Film School
The 5-Week Film School is designed for secondary school and college students, running for two hours per week.
Throughout the course, students learn the fundamentals of filmmaking by actively participating in each step of the process, from creating a story to filming and editing their own project.
With a focus on teamwork, creativity, and technical skills, students gain practical experience in a real-world environment, building a foundation that can take them far beyond the classroom.
Ryan’s Curriculum
-
In our first week, we take a quick look at filmmaking as a whole, study a few a scenes from different genres, and get an overview of some of the equipment before setting out on creating a quick mini-project; editing in camera!
-
Week 2 sees us choosing a genre and writing a story with Pixar’s tried and tested story structure.
Once we’ve got our film idea, we’re going to take a look at what it’s like acting in front of a camera!
-
We’ve chosen our cast, and in the words of Dewey Finn, “Just because you’re not in the band, doesn’t mean you’re not in the band…” (School of Rock, this is essential viewing)
This week we decide on who will fill out each of our crew roles from Director to Photography to Best Boy! Then we get into position and run a tech rehearsal!
-
It’s go time! We’ve got only 2 hours to capture our film. Turn up in costume and get your make up done while the crew sets up! Then we roll cameras, and scream, ACTION!
Will we complete our story, or have to find creative ways to wrap it up?
-
Finally we take a quick look at the editing process using free-to-use DaVinci Resolve, after a few tweaks to the sound and colour, our film is finished and ready to screen!
To finish up the course, we take a look at the different careers in film, TV and video, and Ryan spends time answering any questions the students may still have.
Roles to explore
Every great film is the result of a talented crew working behind the scenes. During the 5-Week Film School, students will get the chance to explore a variety of essential roles within the filmmaking process.
Whether you’re creating the set as an art director, running the camera as a cinematographer, or even acting in front of the camera, there’s a role for every interest!
This course encourages students to try different positions, helping them discover new passions and skills along the way.
Filmmaking Tools
Students at the 5-Week Film School will have access to professional filmmaking tools, including Blackmagic cameras and Hollyland transmitters so students can view footage in real-time on their mobile devices. With lighting, cameras, and sound equipment provided, students will learn hands-on how to use industry-standard gear.
Plus, they'll leave the workshop equipped with the Blackmagic Camera app, which turns their smartphones into professionally controlled cameras, and DaVinci Resolve to edit together any project their minds can come up with.
Cinema Screenings
At the end of the school year, students will have the opportunity to showcase their hard work during an exclusive cinema screening event. Watching their film on the big screen is a rewarding experience that gives a sense of real accomplishment.
Beyond the screening, students are also invited to attend networking events where they can connect with other participants, share insights, and start building relationships within the world of filmmaking. These events create a sense of community and provide invaluable opportunities for students to learn from one another and celebrate their creative journeys.
